Introduction

One of the most common questions we get from Polaris Ranger EV and Bad Boy Buggy owners is: "How many lithium batteries do I need?" The answer is simpler than you might think — but getting it right matters. Too little capacity and you're cutting hunts short. Too much and you've overspent. This guide breaks it down by vehicle so you buy exactly what you need.

It Starts With Voltage

Both the Ranger EV and Bad Boy Buggy are series-wired systems, meaning multiple batteries are connected end-to-end to reach the system voltage. The number of batteries you need is determined first by voltage, then by capacity (Ah).

Polaris Ranger EV — 48V System

Most Ranger EV models use six 8V lead-acid batteries in series to reach 48V. When converting to lithium, you have two options:

  • Single 48V drop-in pack: One unit replaces the entire bank. Cleanest install, easiest wiring — this is what most Ranger EV owners choose
  • Four 12V lithium batteries in series: Wired positive-to-negative in a chain to reach 48V. More flexibility in sourcing but requires careful wiring and individual BMS management

Bad Boy Buggy — 72V System

Classic and Ambush Bad Boy Buggies use six 12V lead-acid batteries in series to reach 72V. For lithium, Lithium Rhino's 76V packs are the purpose-built solution:

  • Lithium Rhino 76V 105Ah: One pack replaces the entire six-battery lead-acid bank. Ideal for a full day of hunting — morning to evening — on a single charge
  • Lithium Rhino 76V 170Ah: One pack, significantly more capacity. Built for multi-day hunts, heavily loaded vehicles, or hilly terrain where the motor works harder

Running at 76V, both packs are fully compatible with 72V Bad Boy Buggy motor controllers and deliver a slight voltage advantage over standard 72V lithium — resulting in stronger acceleration and more consistent power delivery from full charge to nearly empty.

How Much Capacity Do You Actually Need?

Voltage tells you the configuration. Amp-hours (Ah) tell you how far you'll go.

Electric hunting vehicles draw current based on terrain, load, and speed. A rough estimate for most Ranger EV and Bad Boy Buggy use:

Why One Lithium Pack Beats Six Lead-Acid Batteries

Beyond the battery count, the shift from six individual lead-acid batteries to a single lithium pack has real practical advantages:

  • No cell imbalance: In a six-battery lead-acid series bank, one weak battery drags down the entire pack. A single lithium pack with a built-in BMS keeps cells balanced automatically
  • Simpler maintenance: One pack to monitor, one pack to charge, one pack to replace — eventually, many years from now
  • Weight reduction: A 72V lead-acid bank weighs 300+ lbs. A Lithium Rhino 76V pack weighs a fraction of that, improving handling and reducing drivetrain wear
  • Faster charging: One lithium charger, 2–4 hours, done. No managing six individual batteries or worrying about one overcharging

Don't Forget the Charger

Switching to lithium means switching chargers too. Your factory lead-acid charger will not correctly charge a lithium pack — it uses the wrong voltage profile and will undercharge your batteries over time.

  • Ranger EV (48V lithium): Requires a 48V LiFePO4-compatible charger
  • Bad Boy Buggy (Lithium Rhino 76V pack): Requires a 76V lithium charger matched to the pack's charge voltage

Many lithium chargers use the same connector as the factory unit, so the physical swap is straightforward.
